Storms don’t last forever

September 3, 2019

I met SuRie a few months back when she responded to a call out I made for participants in my new project ‘Unseen’, that uses conceptual photography to depict struggles with mental health.

She told me about her experience and I was blown away. Not being a huge Eurovision song contest viewer, I was completely unaware of what had happened to her. SuRie represented The UK in the Eurovision song contest in 2018. During her live performance a political activist jumped up on stage and grabbed the microphone out of her hand and started screaming into it. Due to the glaring lights, SuRie didn’t see the man until he was right in front of her. The ear piece she was wearing blocked out all noise other than the backing track and the microphone sound, so when he screamed into the mic, he effectively screamed into her ears.

I’ve been working with SuRie for a while on this shot. We’ve been working on ways of visually representing how she felt in those moments when all the glitz and glamour were stripped away.
