Illustrating feelings through images

November 21, 2019

My project ‘Unseen’ uses conceptual photography to illustrate the experience of people’s struggles with mental wellbeing.

I use constructed imagery, digitally stitching photographs together in such a way that they present as a single, untampered image.

Through this project I use photography to construct a concept or feeling rather than capturing a real moment in time.

I first photographed SuRie in early summer 2019. We got together to discuss her experience and chat about ways in which we could depict her experience in an image.

SuRie represented The UK in the Eurovision song contest in 2018. During her live performance a political activist jumped up on stage and grabbed the microphone out of her hand and started screaming into it. Due to the glaring lights, SuRie didn’t see the man until he was right in front of her. The ear piece she was wearing blocked out all noise other than the backing track and the microphone sound, so when he screamed into the mic, he effectively screamed into her ears.
